How to lose weight while breastfeeding
Breastfeeding may help you lose weight post-pregnancy, but the amount of weight you’ll lose varies for everyone.
Many new moms mistakenly believe that breastfeeding helps with weight loss after giving birth.
However, while breastfeeding does burn a large number of calories, it also requires a daily intake of approximately 500 more calories than a pre-pregnancy diet.
1. Drink at least 8 cups of water daily
Normally, water helps you lose weight and it is one of the most cost effective, stress-less ways to lose weight without any form of exercise.
So when they say drink at least 8 cups of water every day while breastfeeding, it is one of the best advice you will get when trying to lose weight while breastfeeding your child.
Water helps your body naturally shed unwanted pounds because water: (1)
- Contributes to regular body functions like circulation, digestion, regulation of body temperature, transportation of nutrients, and milk production
- Assists your kidneys and makes it easier to keep your body toxin free
- Helps you feel fuller longer and prevents overeating
- Keeps your muscles working at 100%
- Combines with the oil on your skin to form a protective barrier against the sun’s harmful UV rays and other environmental toxins
Therefore, endeavor to drink more water everyday while breastfeeding your new born baby so you can lose weight soon enough and get back out there with an active lifestyle.
2. Eat a healthy diet
Many pregnant women eat a lot when they are expecting because according to them, they want the baby to come out all chubby and healthy.
But this can have a negative effect on the mother, you.
After the baby is born there’s this extra weight that you carry and most times can’t really shed off because you are too lazy to do anything about it.
So, how do you avoid this?
You eat healthy foods during and after pregnancy. Especially during breastfeeding.
If you are not sure what to eat, here are some healthy recipes for you to eat so you can be healthy and slim again.
3. Do some moderate exercise, yoga is good
For women who are breastfeeding, moderate exercise can be a nice way to lose some pregnancy weight.
The good thing about exercise is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or intense to produce real results.
Cardio can be as simple as going for a brisk walk while pushing your baby in a stroller.
Walking is a low-impact exercise that can raise your heart rate without negatively impacting your knees or joints.
Also, do a little bit of yoga every now and then so you can regain your flexibility and lose weight while at it.
4. Get as much sleep as you can
Sleep can be a very hard thing to get when you just gave birth to a baby. The crying, the feeding, the changing and all the other things that comes with giving birth to a new born baby.
If you don’t have a help to assist you with the child, you will have to handle it yourself and this is where sleep can be hard to get.
But no matter what, there’s hope.
Try to get as much sleep as you can when the baby is sleeping.
This is not a time to catch-up on your favorite TV shows.
Here’s how your body becomes healthier while you sleep:
- Blood pressure returns to its normal level (if elevated during the day by stressors).
- Muscles relax.
- Blood supply to organs and muscles increases.
- Growth hormone is released.
- Breathing and heart rate stabilize and become more consistent.
So no matter what you do, try to get enough rest when breastfeeding you new born.
5. Get help
If you find it hard to balance all these things and still take good care of your baby, you get help.
Either you get someone to help you take care of your baby or you get help to assist you in losing weight.
Either way, you will need help.
The trick is to know when you need help.
Don’t try to be superwoman. You also need your rest.
In fact, if you are not stressed out and tired all the time, you will be able to take really good care of your baby and produce the best quality milk for the baby.
These are 5 great ways you can lose weight while breastfeeding and I hope it has helped you out.
